July 15, 2010
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Alan Grammer, a member of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Athletics Hall of Fame, is returning to his alma mater and will serve as the associate head coach for the wrestling program and Corporate Relations Officer.
Grammer, who won individual national championships in 1985 and 1986 and was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American, will bring his wealth of knowledge back to the SIUE wrestling room under Head Coach David Ray. His dual role in corporate development activities for the Athletics Department will assist the department's external affairs staff.
"I'm excited to rejoin the program in a coaching capacity. I'm pleased with the direction and the mentality that Coach Ray brings to the program, and I want to be a part of its eventual rise in Division I wrestling," said Grammer.
SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt also said the addition of Grammer brings an added level of depth.
"We are very pleased that Alan will join SIUE Athletics not only as a wrestling coach but also as a development assistant. His experience as an All-American wrestler and as a well-respected businessman makes him a very special addition as we continue to strengthen this athletic program," said Hewitt.
"I would first like to thank the people who have made this possible, Dr. Vaughn Vandergrift and Dr. Bradley Hewitt," said Ray. "This is a significant commitment by the University. This positive addition will do nothing but improve on the foundation we are building. The hiring of Alan Grammer makes a strong statement about the Chancellor and Athletic Director on wanting the wrestling program to be a competitive Division I program."
Grammer has been highly successful since leaving SIUE with a career wrestling record of 119-17-1. He has been the owner of Commercial Lawn Care and Irrigation, Inc., Gateway Dog Fence, Gateway Landscape and Sprinkler Systems, Inc., and most recently with Metro-East Dogwatch. He has been instrumental in promoting numerous lasting relationships with a diverse clientele in Southwestern Illinois.
"Alan is a tremendous addition to our development staff and will play a key role in helping us secure private funding for our current capital projects. His passion and commitment to the University over the years makes him a perfect ambassador to help champion our cause with the SIUE alumni," said Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs Todd Garzarelli.
Ray said he was pleased to have Grammer named as his Associate Head Coach.
"I am very excited about bringing Alan Grammer on board. There are many good coaches and alumni out there, but Alan possesses all the characteristics that I was looking for in a coach. One of his strongest attributes is his business experience and background over 25 years. He also has a very strong influence in the local community. Alan not only has a passion for the sport of wrestling but for SIUE as well. He wants to see the program at a national level and is willing to do whatever he can and will work endless hours to help this goal become reality. This is a great day for SIUE and SIUE Wrestling," added Ray.
