EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team will face McKendree College Thursday at the Vadalabene Center on senior night.
"McKendree is tough, and it will be a close match. We just want to see our wrestlers give it their all and compete," said SIUE wrestling coach Khris Whelan. The first match begins at 7 p.m.
The Cougars will need to step-up as a team because they will be for forfeiting heavyweight, and Brandon Cleary (Mahomet) at 184 is out due to a neck injury.
"For senior night, we will be honoring the seniors. Former Cougar wrestlers who are coaching in the area also will come out to be honored," added Whelan.
The 21 SIUE wrestling alumni who have or are currently coaching wrestling at the high school level and will be honored include Eric Roberson, Maurice Brown, Al Sears, Dennis Ragan, Steve Bradley, Tom Blaha, Jon Wagner, Glenn Exton, Russ Witzig, Sam Parker, Russ Baum, Mark Kristoff, Kip Kristoff, Steve Garland, Mike Garland, Bob Dahm, Phil Johns, Jayson Querciagrossa, Eric Morgan, Terry Mulrenin, Steve Stearns and Brian McTague.
Many of the current high school coaches are bringing their teams to the meet to be apart of the celebration.
"We are hoping for a big turnout for senior night," said Whelan.
