EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE wrestling is getting set to compete in one of the nation's newest and unique events of the collegiate season.
Over the next two days, SIUE will compete in four dual matches at the South Beach Duals in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Twelve schools will be competing on six mats at the Deerfield Beach Sportsplex. The opponents for all of the teams have been pre-determined.
"We're down in Florida where it is 75 to 80 degrees, and it makes for a good team atmosphere," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "Mostly everyone on the team will get matches during this event. We're seeing four teams that we wouldn't normally see in a regular dual atmosphere. There are a lot of benefits to it so hopefully we can come away with some wins."
On Friday, SIUE (1-4) faces Michigan State (1-1) at 10 a.m. CT followed by Binghamton (3-1) at 12 p.m. CT. On Saturday, the Cougars square off against No. 21 North Carolina (2-3) at 10 a.m. CT followed by future Mid-American Conference rival Kent State (6-2) at 12 p.m. CT.
"Hopefully we have gotten healthier as a team over the break," said Spates. "If we wrestle at the level that we can, we're going to look forward to four good matches."
