ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Freddie Rodriguez won his second tournament title of the season as SIUE wrestling finished with three wrestlers among the top three in their respective weight classes at the Joe Parisi Open Saturday.
"Overall we accomplished what we wanted in these tournaments," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "I think we will improve as the season progresses."
It was the third of three tournaments in the month of November for the Cougars. SIUE is now idle until Dec. 4 when the Cougars play host at the Vadalabene Center to North Dakota State at 2:30 p.m. and Indiana at 4 p.m.
Rodriguez, a 125-pounder ranked 11th nationally by Intermat, was 4-0 for the tournament with two pins. He dispatched Missouri's Aaron Assad in the finals 11-4.
"Freddie wrestled great," said Spates. "I'm not sure he gave up an offensive point the whole tournament."
"Trevor scored a lot of points in his matches and was able to get a major decision against an opponent from Missouri who he lost to previously," said Spates.
"Jake wrestled such a good tournament," added Spates.
SIUE also picked up four other place winners. Gage Datlovsky took fifth in the freshman/sophomore division. Tyshawn Williams took sixth in the 149-pound open division. Nate Higgins placed fifth in the 165-pound open division. Jake Residori finished fifth in the 174-pound open division.
