Cougars Earn Come-From-Behind Victory
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - SIUE wrestling won the final four matches Wednesday and picked up a 23-22 dual meet victory at Truman.
The Cougars improved to 3-15 in dual meets with consecutive wins by Jake Residori, Derek Nagel, Deshoun White, and David Devine.
"It was exciting all the way to the end," said SIUE Head Coach David Ray. "It was a team effort. I'm proud of all of them."
Patrick Myers got the Cougars started at 133 pounds with SIUE's first victory of the night. He pinned Truman's Tyler Stanley in 58 seconds.
The Cougars fell behind 22-6 after a forfeit at 165 pounds. The final four Cougars marched the team toward victory.
Residori started the charge at 174 pounds with his team-leading seventh pin of the season. He pinned Chase Wrisinger with SIUE's second first-period pin of the night at 2:16.
Nagel scored seven points in the first period and picked up a 10-6 victory at 184 pounds over Nate Seiler.
White, normally a 174-pounder, stepped in at 197 pounds and delivered an 11-3 major decision over Helmut Rentschler.
Devine capped the event with an identical 11-3 score at 285 pounds over Ryan Ward, sealing the team victory for the Cougars.
Ray said Chris Johnson also won his exhibition match after the meet concluded.
"It put an exclamation on the night. It was nice," said Ray.
Truman, which was coming off a win over Division II-ranked Fort Hays State, fell to 6-5 overall.
The Cougars now have one week to prepare for the Missouri Tigers. SIUE meets Missouri next Wednesday in Columbia at 7 p.m.
"I told the team to enjoy and then get ready for Missouri," Ray said.
