IOWA CITY, Iowa – SIUE wrestling began its 2012-13 dual season with a pair of losses and an exhibition victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Cougars, 0-2, were defeated by Iowa (49-0) and Cornell (Iowa) (21-20). SIUE upended Iowa Central College (36-4).

Seven of Iowa's 10 wrestlers entered the dual match ranked in the top 15 in their respective weight classes. The Cougars allowed bonus team points along the way until David Devine gave up just three team points in a 4-1 loss to No. 6-ranked Bobby Telford at heavyweight.

SIUE Head Coach David Ray said Iowa drew out the team's weaknesses and that will give the Cougars things to improve going forward.

"They showed us what we're not doing in the practice room," said Ray.

SIUE would fare better against Cornell with four individual victories, including pins from Drew Vrbenec at 141 pounds over Ray Feliz and Jake Residori at 157 pounds over Benjamin Rosen.

Devine added a major decision over Cornell's Carl Gaul 12-4. Patrick Myers joined Residori with a 6-1 overall record after collecting a major decision over Ben Rosen.

"The guys who won really took it to them," Ray said.

SIUE won seven of eight contested matches in the exhibition over Iowa Central. Myers, Devine, Dillon Pousson, and Chris Johnson each pinned their opponents. Three of the pins were first-period falls.

Next up for the SIUE wrestling team is a trip to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Duals. SIUE faces host Indiana, Bucknell, and Gardner-Webb. The Gardner-Webb match is SIUE's first official Southern Conference (SoCon) dual meet.

Ray challenged his team to continue to improve. "We have to go back to the drawing board," he added.
