SIUE Wrestling Signs McMahon, Residori
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. – SIUE Wrestling Head Coach David Ray announced the signings of Connor McMahon (Stow, Ohio) and Jacob Residori (Shorewood) to join the Cougars next season.
Ray said both wrestlers have the confidence to succeed in the Southern Conference and the Division I level.
"Both of these young men feel they can win. They're confident. That's the No. 1 thing you have to have," said Ray. "Both of these young men are winners, in life and on the mat. They are positive role models and leaders for SIUE and the wrestling program."
McMahon, a runner-up at 160 pounds at the Ohio State Championships, boasted a career prep record of 148-19. He was a two-time state place winner, a two-time All-Conference selection, and a conference Most Valuable Player.
A four-year letter winner at Stow Munroe-Falls High School, McMahon competed for the Pennsylvania All-American Wrestling Club. Ray said he sees McMahon as a 157-pounder.
"He is tenacious on the mat and goes hard. He has great leg attacks. He attacks like a collegiate wrestler already and finishes very well. He is intense and improved a lot through the year. There's not much we have to change technically with him," Ray said.
Residori, the 170-pound champion at the Illinois State High School Association championships in February, was a three-time state place winner for Minooka High School. He finished fourth as a junior and sixth as a sophomore.
He also was a scholar-athlete honored as an Academic All-State football player. He also was the conference Most Valuable Player in football.
"He has great leg attacks and is a pinner. He's very tenacious on his feet. He's someone who I can see starting with us as a freshman. I see Residori being very successful in making the transition from high school to collegiate wrestling."
