SIUE Track and Field Announces Four Signees

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE track and field has added four impressive names to its 2018 recruiting class.

The Cougars have inked Rachyl Anderson (Catlin, Illinois), Brandon Bretz (Mahomet, Illinois), Conor McCarthy (Lockport, Illinois) and Isabelle Kennedy (Roselle, Illinois) for the 2018-19 season.

Rachyl Anderson
Salt Fork High School, Throws

Head Coach Scott Block on Anderson: "Rachyl is the No. 1 returning Discus thrower in Illinois this year. She has a good attitude and a better work ethic. She has thrown 149 feet in the discus and better than 41 feet in the shot put and has potential in the other throwing events.  I am excited to work with Rachyl and develop her as a thrower."

Anderson finished third in the discus and seventh in the shot put at the IHSA 1A State Championships last spring. She placed first in both the shot and discus at nine meets during her junior outdoor season. Anderson finished first in the shot put in her lone indoor meet last season.

PRs: Indoor shot put (41-9), outdoor shot put (41-3) and discus (149-0)

Brandon Bretz
Mahomet-Seymour High School, Sprints

Assistant Coach Joey Pacione on Bretz: "Brandon is an athlete who has incredible desire to improve himself and will come to SIUE ready to work. He was consistently under 50 seconds in his first year running the 400, so he displays a lot of potential. He'll join our young and talented group of long sprinters that have high hopes to build success together."

Bretz finished third at the 2017 IHSA 2A State Championships in the 400. He has a personal record time of 49.62 in the 400. Bretz finished first seven times in three different events (100, 200 and 400) during last year's outdoor season. He placed first in the 200 once last indoor season.

PRs: 60m (7.39), 100m (11.39), 200m indoor (23.08) and 200m outdoor (22.51).

Conor McCarthy
Lockport High School, Jumps

Pacione on McCarthy: "Conor is a hard-working and determined athlete who will immediately step in and make in impact in both long and triple jump. He broke out his junior year by improving both of his jumps by almost three feet so I think he is starting to understand how high his potential is. We are thrilled to have signed one of the best jumpers in the state of Illinois, and I expect Conor to help us continue our history of success in the horizontal jumps."

McCarthy's junior outdoor season saw him participate in the IHSA 3A State Championships in both the triple jump and long jump. He placed top-3 in six meets for the long jump, and placed top-three four times in the triple jump during last outdoor season. During the indoor season, McCarthy placed first six times in four different events (long jump, triple jump, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay).

PRs: Indoor long jump (22-3.75), outdoor long jump (22-10.5), indoor triple jump (41-6.75) and outdoor triple jump (45-4.5).

Isabelle Kennedy
Lake Park High School, Jumps

Pacione on Kennedy: "Isabelle is a genuinely great person who will be a welcome addition to our team. Her work ethic and love for the sport are going to help us continue in building our culture.  Her triple jump has consistently improved throughout her career and last year her long jump broke through as well. She will be able to make an impact from the day she arrives on campus. It's a great sign for our program to be able to attract one of the top female jumpers in the state."

Kennedy competed in the 2017 IHSA 3A State Championships in both the long jump and triple jump. Kennedy placed top-three for the both the long jump and triple jump at four meets during last outdoor season. She also competed in the 100, where she took home first place once, and the 4x100m relay. During Kennedy's 2017 indoor season, she placed first twice in the long jump and once in the triple jump.
