COLUMBIA, Mo. – The SIUE men's and women's track & field teams competed at their first meet of 2013 when they traveled to participate at the Missouri Invitational on Friday.

"Today was the first of many meets for us this season," Head Coach Kareem Jackson said.  "It was an opportunity for us to get out there and see where we're at, and there were some really good things that happened."

On the women's side, senior Aftan Noon finished second in 1,000 meters while also setting a new school record with a time of 2:55.78.

"Aftan had a great day," Jackson said.  "I know this was something that she and coach (Eileen) McAllister have been working on, so it was great to see her have success."

Freshman LaDonna Caston finished third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.69, which also tied for third on the program's all-time list.

For the men's team, junior Braxton Klavins took home first-place honors in the 400 meters with a time of 49.04, while teammate Josh Thomas came in second with a time of 51.16.

Sophomore Greg Block also had a productive day in the throws, finishing fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 18.01 meters, which set a new personal best.

The Cougars won't have much time to recover, as they hit the road again on Saturday to compete at the Illini Classic in Champaign.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

"We're really looking forward to Saturday's meet," Jackson added.  "It will be an electric atmosphere with a tremendous amount of competition."
