CHARLESTON, Ill. - Ben Bishop broke his own school record in the hammer throw by more than 10 feet as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville made a strong showing at the EIU Invitational.
SIUE finished third among the five teams. Team scores were totaled in dual-meet style. The Cougars defeated Loyola 97-29 and UW-Milwaukee 81-79. Indiana State was the overall champion with wins over Eastern Illinois, Loyola, SIUE and UW-Milwaukee.
Bishop won the hammer event with a winning toss of 212 feet. That topped his previous best and SIUE's record of 201-8 set earlier this season. The hammer was the only event held on Friday evening.
Bishop was a double winner for the Cougars with a victory in the discus with a throw of 165-0. He also took second in the shot put behind Indiana State's Brandon Pounds.
One of SIUE's more exciting finishes on the track came in the 400-meter hurdles. William Lindsey and Marcus Evans finished one-two in the event. Lindsey won the second of two heats in 53.91 seconds. Evans cross the finish line just beside him at 54.58.
Lindsey also took second in the 100-meter hurdles, corralling a time of 14.64.
Kaleb Henry also recorded a first-place mark in the javelin. He won the event with a toss of 198-8.
Andrew Thierry was a double runner-up in the jumping events. His long jump of 22-5 and triple jump of 45-8.5 left him only inches short of individual victories.
Eric Mammoser cruised to a third-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 15-1.
Chris Littleton was strong for the Cougars in the sprints with a second-place finish at 200 meters in 22.09. He also placed third with a time of 49.34 at 400 meters.
The Cougars now head to the Joey Haines Invitational next Saturday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
