EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's and men's track and field teams are ready to continue their success from the 2007 indoor season into the outdoor season.
"I am very excited about the potential for both squads. Hopefully, we will be able to build off of some of the success that our programs experienced during the indoor season," said SIUE track and field coach David Astrauskas.
The Cougars start their outdoor season at the Missouri Relays Saturday in Columbia, Mo. The SIUE women's team finished a school-best sixth place at the NCAA Championships, and the SIUE men's team featured one sprinter as an All-American.
"We will start off the season training through the first couple of meets, and then we will begin the peaking process for the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference) Championships and the ultimately the NCAA meet," said Astrauskas.
Both teams would also like to continue their outdoor success from last season where both teams placed seventh at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
"We have some big goals for this outdoor season, and we would like to improve on our national finish at the end of the year," said Astrauskas.
Astrauskas added that SIUE's outdoor teams should be stronger than the indoor teams because of the additional throwing events and the 400-meter hurdles. "Traditionally we have been strong in these areas, and I look for continued success in those events," said Astrauskas.
