ST. LOUIS, Mo. – SIUE men's tennis won two singles flights and a doubles flight in its opening tournament of the season at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
Senior Jacob Tanulanond won all three of his singles matches at the Billiken Classic and won the No. 5 flight.
"This team has one senior, and he certainly showed up this weekend and competed by example," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.
Tanulanond won all three of his singles matches in straight sets. He defeated Saint Louis' Luis Miguel Flores 7-6, 6-2; Irving Corrales of Missouri-St. Louis 7-6, 6-3; and Lewis' Chris Jastrab 6-2, 6-0.
"It was good for Patrick to get in some fall experience," said Coomer. "He did well this weekend for us."
Washuta was perfect in his final singles match of the day over Jack Lorentsen 6-0, 6-0.
SIUE finished with a 13-8 record in singles matches and a 5-4 record in doubles matches.
Coomer said the fall tournament gives him an opportunity to see what level his players are after returning to campus from the summer.
"We understand as a team that we have quite a long way to get to where we want to be. I'm confident our players have the right attitude and work ethic that will allow them to reach the level they aspire," Coomer said.
Next up for the Cougars is the SIUE Fall Invitational Sept. 20-22.
