SIUE Men's Tennis Cruises Past Fighting Leathernecks
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The SIUE men's tennis team dominated Western Illinois from start to finish in a 6-1 win Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
"I thought our team responded well today," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "They came to the courts focused and ready to play."
The Cougars (5-11) opened their season-ending three-match homestand by sweeping doubles for the first point. SIUE lost just one game in all three matches to the Fighting Leathernecks, who dropped to 4-11 with the loss.
"Setting the tone in doubles and carrying that intensity over to our singles matches was very important," added Coomer.
Things continued in the same fashion as the Cougars won five of the six singles matches closing out the 6-1 victory.
Neither Devan Faulkenberg nor Jacob Tanulanond lost a game in their matches winning 6-0, 6-0 over WIU's Daniel Sweeney and Jesus Roman, respectively, at No. 4 and 5 singles.
Nicolas Vincent defeated Andrew Yopp at No. 3 singles while Gary Dias defeated Justin Liss at the No. 6 spot by similar scores of 6-0, 6-1.
"Gary was a bright spot in singles today," said Coomer. "His level of focus allowed him to play a very smart match."
The Cougars remain at home for their next match April 15 against conference foe Tennessee Tech.
