Cougar Men's Tennis Opens Season at River Forest Collegiate Invitational

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Freshman Morten Jonsson was a perfect 3-0 on the day to lead the SIUE men's tennis team at the River Forest Collegiate Invitational Friday in its season-opening tournament.

"I am really happy for Morten Jonsson getting his first collegiate wins," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.

Jonsson earned his first win in doubles with partner Jacob Tanulanond as the duo defeated Western Illinois' Patrick Hammers and Mitch Granger 8-6.

The Pitea, Sweden native later picked up a pair of singles victories over Hammers 6-1, 6-4 and the University of Chicago's Troy Brinker 6-3, 6-3.

"I was very happy with the way our doubles teams came out with an aggressive approach and stuck to their game plan, which showed in the results," added Coomer.

The Cougars picked up another doubles win as Stephen Washuta and Gary Dias earned their first victory for SIUE defeating Bryant Wei and Nikita Kapshuk from Northern Illinois 8-3.

"We look forward to day two tomorrow," said Coomer. "We are going to try and make some adjustments in singles play and step on the court and play to the level we are capable of."

Play will continue Saturday with the final day of the tournament from the River Forest Tennis Club beginning at 9 a.m.
