EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Gary Dias signed a National Letter of Intent to play tennis for the SIUE men in 2012, according to Head Coach Jason Coomer.
"Gary will be a great addition to our program as we have been tracking his progress for quite some time," Coomer said. "As we continue to build depth on our team, I expect him to arrive on campus and make an immediate impact."
Dias, a native of Lauderhill, Fla., was a four-year varsity player at J.P. Taravella High School where he won a district title at No. 1 singles as a senior in 2010. He then advanced to the Class 4A state tournament for the first time but ultimately lost in the quarterfinal round.
Dias also captured a district title at No. 2 singles as a freshman and was a finalist in both singles and doubles during his sophomore and junior seasons.
"In addition to his strong work ethic on the court, Gary's drive to excel in the classroom was evident from the beginning," Coomer added. "That was something extremely important to us during the recruiting process."
Dias transfers to SIUE from Broward College where he did not participate in tennis.
"Gary has had an extremely demanding tournament schedule while coming through juniors in Florida," Coomer said. "His match experience should serve as an asset for him as he makes the move to the college tennis scene."
