SIUE's Jones Selected in MLS Supplemental Draft
Jan. 18, 2011
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Mike Jones (St. Peters, Mo.), a four-year standout for the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team, was selected in the Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft Tuesday.
The 6-foot, 2-inch back was the 28th overall pick and the second of the supplemental draft by Sporting Kansas City.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Mike. He has developed into a first-class center back and possesses the skills needed to play at the next level," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish.
Jones joins a long line of SIUE players who have been drafted or have played at the professional level in men's soccer. He was a second team All-Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) selection in 2010 and helped the Cougars to runner-up status in the MVC Tournament in its inaugural season in the league.
He played 60 games for the Cougars in his four seasons (2006-2010) and finished with six goals and two assists playing on the back line. SIUE recorded 27 shutouts over Jones' four seasons.
During the 2010 season, Jones recorded goals in back-to-back wins over Eastern Illinois and Central Arkansas. He also provided the assist on the game-winning goal in SIUE's MVC Tournament semifinal win over Missouri State.
Jones joins fellow supplemental picks Sam Scales of Ohio State and Michal Mravec of Alabama-Birmingham as Sporting Kansas City selections.
"It's good to see him get drafted by Kansas City. All of the Cougar family is very proud of Mike, and we wish him all the best," said Kalish.
