CHICAGO, Ill. - Jack Hillgard scored the game-winning goal 2:13 into overtime Sunday as No. 25 Northwestern outlasted Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 1-0 in men's college soccer.

Hillgard headed the ball past SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer after a 35- to 40-yard service from a free kick by Mark Blades. It was Hillgard's first goal of the season.

"It seems like that (restarts) has been our Achilles' heel this season," said SIUE Coach Kebin Kalish.

The Cougars stood up well to the Wildcats, which have become an NCAA Tournament mainstay over the past handful of seasons.

"We played a pretty complete game," said Kalish. "It was a total team effort. It was a good game between two good teams."

Strong winds in the Chicago area meant each team had a distinct offensive advantage for one half each. The Cougars held the advantage first with a 6-3 edge in shots in the first half. Northwestern collected 13 shots in the second half to SIUE's four.

It became a duel of goalkeepers with SIUE's Meyer recording four saves. Northwestern split its goalkeeper duties with Jonathan Harris taking the first half and Drew Kotler playing the second half and overtime. The duo combined for four saves.

Jack Twellman led SIUE with three shots. Northwestern's Matt Eliason led all players with six shots.

Kalish said he's pleased with the progress the team has made this season.

"I'm proud of the effort and the hard work the guys are putting in," he added.

Northwestern improved to 4-1-3 with the win. SIUE dropped its second straight and is now 2-5-1. SIUE is now idle until next Saturday when it travels to IUPU-Indianapolis for a 2 p.m. ET game in Indianapolis.
