SIUE (6-6-0, 1-0 MAC)
at Akron (7-3-1-, 0-1 MAC)
Fri., Oct. 13, 6 p.m. CT
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer returns to Mid-American Conference play Friday with a 6 p.m. CT match at Akron.
SIUE (6-6-0) has won three straight games, including its first MAC contest, a 3-1 home win against Bowling Green.
"First and foremost we are healthy, and that's the most important thing," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "The belief continues to grow. The self-belief is growing, and the belief in each other is growing. I expect that continue."
Akron is 7-3-1 overall and 0-1 after dropping its conference opener on the road at No. 12 Western Michigan. The Zips have won five of their last six games.
"We've been preparing all season for games like this," Sanchez said. "For the rest of the season, almost every game is massive. All of our remaining games have an effect on post season. We want our norm for this program to be playing in these big games."
The Cougars just wrapped up a season-high four consecutive games at home.
"It's important to keep a routine regardless of where we are playing," Sanchez said. "That is true for the coaches as well in how we present the scouting report to the team and run our training."
Sanchez added that Akron will present challenges similar to what SIUE has faced.
"They're a talented team that tries to keep the ball and when they don't have the ball they press you to get the ball back," he said. "That is true of every top program. They are good at it."
