CHICAGO – Kyle Thomson dealt the deciding blow for Loyola Saturday night. His goal in the 85th minute sent the Ramblers to a 1-0 win over SIUE men's soccer at Loyola Soccer Park.
The Cougars have dropped two straight and are 3-5 for the season. Loyola moved to 4-4 with the win.
Despite the result, SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez was encouraged.
"The guys played well," Sanchez said. "They competed the whole game. In some aspects it was one of the most complete game we have played."
Thompson's goal came off a free kick from 25 yards away from goal. Fabian Lifka delivered the ball into the box. Thomson headed it home from 10 yards out.
SIUE took only three shots, though two were on goal. Loyola goalkeeper Aidan Aylward turned away both attempts. Jorge Gonzalez, Gabe Christianson and Mohamed Awad each had a single shot. Gonzalez and Awad each put a shot on frame. Kyle Dal Santo stopped three of four shots on goal from the Ramblers. Loyola outshot SIUE 9-3 for the game.
"As much as it hurts to lose, I am proud of the guys and the way we played," Sanchez said.
Following three road games, SIUE returns home for a Saturday night matchup with Oral Roberts at Korte Stadium.
"You don't control everything," Sanchez continued. "One thing we do control is attitude. The guys had a great attitude. If we continue to have the right attitude good things will happen."
