EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE sophomore Lachlan McLean's goal 3:35 into overtime vaulted the SIUE men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Valparaiso Saturday at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars have won two straight and improved to 2-3-0 with the victory. Valpo fell to 2-2-1.
"That was a great soccer game," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "Valparaiso has a very good team. Getting a shutout against a team like that is massive for us."
Jared Tejada played a long pass down the right sideline to Keegan McHugh. HcHugh eluded a defender to run the pass down before getting the ball back to the McLean at the top of the box. McLean touched it once then lined a left-foot shot past Valpo goalkeeper Alex Richt.
"Keegan came in, runs a ball down and plays a great ball back to Lachlan," Sanchez said. And that finish, the kid is unbelievable in the box."
The goal made it a hat trick for the week for McLean, who scored both goals in SIUE's 2-0 win over Memphis Monday.
For the game, the Cougars outshot the Crusaders 9-5. McLean's winner was the only shot in overtime.
The shutout was the second straight for SIUE. It is the 21st career shutout for senior goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo, establishing a new school record.
"We needed this tonight, to bounce back and to get wins and two shutouts is great."
SIUE now heads on the road for three consecutive games. The Cougars will face Princeton Friday night before traveling to Penn for a Sunday game.
