Cougars Shut Out Central Arkansas
CONWAY, Ark. – SIUE men's soccer closed out the Missouri Valley Conference regular season Saturday with a 1-0 victory at Central Arkansas.
The Cougars, 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the MVC, will wait for the remaining schedule to be completed to find out their seed for the State Farm MVC Championships Nov. 7-11 in Peoria. SIUE currently holds second place in league play. The rest of the MVC has either one or two matches left tonight and next week before the seeds are final.
"It was a vital conference match to win on the road," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish of Saturday's win. "Central Arkansas is a challenging opponent to play against, and it was important to get the shutout as we conclude the conference regular season."
The top two teams in the State Farm MVC Tournament earned first-round byes. The next four teams play in the quarterfinal round Nov. 7.
Christian Volesky scored the game's lone goal at 41:12. Volesky connected on the MVC-leading ninth goal of the season and his second game winner.
Senior defender Benny Jeffery set up the restart for the Cougars. He served up a ball off a free kick to Volesky who headed the ball from six yards out past UCA goalkeeper Cody Gibson.
"At this point in the season, it's about players stepping up and making plays. It was a quality service by Benny, and Christian was clinical with his finish," said Kalish.
SIUE posted its seventh shutout of the season. Kent Kobernus was in goal for the Cougars and grabbed three saves for his third solo shutout .
Central Arkansas dropped to 1-4 in the MVC and 7-8 overall. Ethan Miller and Taylor Hart led the Bears with three shots each.

"We now will begin to prepare for Duke on Friday," Kalish said.
