No. 23 SIUE Edged by UIC

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Despite outshooting its opponent in both halves, No. 23 SIUE men's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision Wednesday to UIC at Korte Stadium.

SIUE fell to 7-3 while UIC improved to 3-4-2.

"It was a down performance for us," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish. "I felt like our mindset and approach going into it wasn't great and obviously we got punished for it."

The Flames scored at 83:19 off a throw-in by Colin Marz. His throw-in evaded everyone in the box until Joel Salmeron headed the ball just inside the far post from three yards out.

"The ball dropped in the six and bounced. (Salmeron) snuck in late and finished one," Kalish explained.

UIC goalkeeper Goran Ikic picked up the shutout with four saves in his first action of the season. Kent Kobernus also had four saves in goal for the Cougars.

SIUE had numerous opportunities, including 10 corner kicks for the game. Brett Lane and Jordan Barnes each finished with three shots for the Cougars. SIUE outshot UIC 4-2 in the first half and 11-8 in the second half.

The Cougars are now idle for six days before returning to play at Korte Stadium. SIUE welcomes Nebraska-Omaha next Tuesday in a 7 p.m. contest.
