EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE golf hits the course for its first tournament of the year Friday. The Cougars are part of a 19-team field at Air Force's Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"We saw a lot of improvement last year throughout the year and at the OVC Championship," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "We hope that momentum will carry over into this year."
The Cougars return almost the entire roster from a year ago when SIUE finished third at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The lineup for the event will feature five upperclassmen:
"We return a lot of talent and a lot of guys who have a ton of experience," Brown said. "We're excited to kick this year off."
The Falcon Invitational will take place on the Blue Course at the Eisenhower Golf Club at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The course is a par 72 and will play at 7,461 yards. The tournament includes three 18-hole rounds Friday through Sunday.
"We're going to get out there and try to get accustomed to everything," Brown added. "It's a slightly different format than normal."
The rest of the field includes Abilene Christian, host Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Drake, George Washington, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Southern Utah, Texas State, UNLV, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State, UTEP, Weber State and Wyoming.
"We're going to see 10 different conferences out there," Brown said. "It's going to be a wide variety of schools. It will be good for us."
Live scoring will be available for the tournament at GolfStat.com and results will be posted to SIUECougars.com following each day of competition.
