SIUE's Long Recognized by the OVC

Announcement from the OVC

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – SIUE freshman golfer Luke Long picked up a trio of honors from the Ohio Valley Conference Monday night.

The native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was selected as the OVC Freshman of the Year in addition to being selected to the All-OVC team and the OVC All-Newcomer team. He is the only freshman chosen to the All-OVC team.

The awards were announced at the annual postseason banquet following the first round of the OVC Championship tournament.

"It's nice that the OVC coaches recognized his talent and the year that he has had," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "He is one of the most consistent players I have coached."

Long entered the tournament with a scoring average of 73.7, which leads all freshmen in the league and is 12th overall in the OVC. He has two individual top-10 finishes and four other top-20 finishes.

The Freshman of the Year Award is a first for an SIUE golfer. Long is just the second player from SIUE chosen to the All-OVC team, joining Colin McCarty in 2013. He is the third SIUE selection to the All-Newcomer team.

"It is a testament to him, being a freshman on the All-OVC team," Brown added. "He gets pushed by a great group of guys and I think that's part of his success. I am glad he was rewarded."

SIUE leads the OVC Championship after one round. The Cougars combined to shoot the fourth best round in school history (282) Monday. The tournament continues with the second round Tuesday. Long tied his career-low round with a 69 Monday. He currently is third.
