MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – SIUE golf tied its fourth lowest round in school history (282) Monday and owns a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship.
The Cougars finished the day six-under par. Jacksonville State (285) is second and Eastern Kentucky (286) is third, four strokes behind the Cougars. Austin Peay is fourth with a one-over-par 289.
"We stuck to a game plan," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "The guys played fantastic today."
Individually, Luke Long leads the Cougars and is third overall. He tied his career-best round with a
69 (-3). He is just two shots off the overall lead.
Tennessee Tech's Charles Seals and Jacksonville State's Bobby Hayes are tied for the lead at 67 (-5).
Play resumes with the second round Tuesday at The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals.
"We've put ourselves in good position after day one," Brown added. "We need to come out with the same mentality tomorrow and Wednesday."
