EDWADSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE men's golf bested a field of 11 teams at the SIUE Double Tree Intercollegiate completed Tuesday at Sunset Hills Country Club. The win is the first for SIUE as a Division I program. The Cougars finished with a combined score of 893, which was nine strokes better than second-place Missouri State.
"I thought it was a great tournament," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "Our first two rounds were very solid. Today through the conditions (wind) the guys hung in well."
Freshman Mitchell Homb led the way for SIUE. Homb finished with a combined 218 to finish in a tie for second place. Homb's first round score of 71 was the lowest of his career. The 218 is the best 54-hole total and is among the top performances in school history.
Eastern Illinois' David Lawrence took medalist honors with a combined 216.
Brown said it was nice for the Cougars to play on their home course.
"It's always nice to host," he said. "Sunset (Hills) has done a nice job for us for two years now. It's nice to have a familiarity with the course especially on a windy day like today."
The Cougars begin the 2012 portion of the schedule Feb. 27 at the Snowman Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz.
