No. 7 Indianapolis Downs Cougars
January 15, 2004|
No. 7th-ranked Indianapolis shot 51.9 percent from the field as it topped host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 70-56 in men's basketball action Thursday night at the Vadalabene Center.
Indianapolis improves to 15-1 overall and 8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while SIUE dips to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Seven Greyhounds scored six or more points. Leading the way for Indy was David Logan's 14 points. Ryan Hixson added 12.
Tyler Hackstadt led the way for the Cougars with 22 points, which included 5 of 9 from three-point range. Calvin Sykes added 15 for SIUE and Ron Jones chipped in 10.
When it seemed SIUE was gaining momentum in the second half, Indianapolis would answer with clutch field goals. SIUE pulled to within seven points with just over three minutes to play on a Sykes three, but that was as close as they would get.
Neither team took care of the ball much, as Indianapolis recorded 22 turnovers while SIUE had 20. Indianapolis outscored SIUE 34-20 in the paint.
SIUE will now gear up for Northern Kentucky, who visits the Vadalabene Center Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
