Cougars Defeated 50-31 at SIUC

         CARBONDALE, ILL. -- Even though Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball team held SIU Carbondale to a 28 percent field goal percentage it wasn't enough falling 50-31 in exhibition action on Saturday.
         Mike Hardiek led the Cougars with just seven points on 3-6 shooting as SIUE shot just 25.6 percent for the contest.
         Cold shooting doomed the Cougars from the start at SIU Arena going 5 for 22 in the first half for 22.7 percent. SIUE then went 5-17 in the second half.
         SIUE is now 0-2 in the preseason traveling to Mackey Arena for a 5 p.m. game Sunday against perennial Big Ten power Purdue.
         The Salukis outrebouned the Cougars 52-32 in the game and SIUC had 21 more shots in the contest.
         Justin Ward netted four points adding eight rebounds, and J.B. Jones handed out five assists.
         Tony Young led all scorers with 12 points adding five rebounds for SIUC.
         The Cougars trailed 23-12 at the half.
         SIUE was plagued by 27 turnovers. The Salukis committed 20 in the contest.
         SIUE will open the regular season against Lindenwood on Wednesday night at the Vadalabene Center at 7:30 p.m.
