The longest winning streak in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball history ended Tuesday night at Quincy.
The Quincy Hawks snapped SIUE's school-record 16-game winning streak with a 78-68 victory at Pepsi Arena. SIUE is now 20-4 overall and remain a half-game ahead of Southern Indiana in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division.
Southern Indiana, which travels to Quincy itself on Thursday, invades the Vadalabene Center Saturday for a battle of teams tied No. 10 in the nation in this week's NABC Division II poll. Southern Indiana is currently 23-3 overall and 12-3 in the GLVC.
In Tuesday's game, a crowd of 903 watched as Quincy erased SIUE's winning streak with three players in double figures. Ryan Walker led the Hawks with 19 points, including three three-pointers. Andre Muse collected 18 points and Jordan Roth added 12 points.
SIUE's Ryan Belcher led all scorers with a season-high 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and four steals. J.B. Jones finished with 13 points and Mike Hardiek checked in with 11 points.
Quincy, which improved to 16-8 and 11-5 in the GLVC, used some sharpshooting in the first half to grab a 31-21 lead by halftime. The Hawks used an 11-2 run near the end of the half behind seven points from Walker, including a three-pointer with 2:33 to give Quincy a 29-19 lead.
SIUE was down by as much as 14 points in the second half but clawed to within four points at 54-50. Walker dazzled the Quincy crowd with a 26-foot three-pointer to give the Hawks a seven-point lead with 5:30 left to play.
Despite shooting 56 percent in the second half, SIUE couldn't close the gap. SIUE shot 2 of 8 from three-point range in the second half.
