Southern Illinois University Edwardsville won its record 12th straight men's basketball game Thursday with a 91-62 drubbing of Saint Joseph's at the Vadalabene Center.
The Cougars, ranked 16th in the nation in the latest NABC/Division II poll, broke the old record of 11 consecutive wins set 19 seasons ago. Coach Marty Simmons and his Cougars improved to 13-2 and continue to hold a share of the nation's longest winning streak this season. SIUE remains the lone undefeated team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 6-0.
Dan Heimos turned in the best offensive performance of his career with all-time bests of 20 points and 11 rebounds. The backcourt of J.B. Jones and Anthony Jones added 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Saint Joseph's, which fell to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC, took control early. The Pumas took advantage of four SIUE turnovers in the first five minutes of the game and raced to a 16-7 lead.
After Simmons called a quick timeout at 14:29 left in the first half, the two team exchanged baskets as the Pumas maintained their nine-point lead at 18-9.
Then SIUE turned on the offense against the Pumas, running off a 39-14 advantage to end the half. Heimos and J.B. Jones both had 12 points at the break as the Cougars shot an astonshing 71.4 percent from the field.
The Cougars didn't hold back in the second half. SIUE shot better than 60 percent in the second half as Saint Joseph's never was able to cut into SIUE's lead.
         J.B. Jones' 19 was a career-high. He also finished with a team-best six assists.
SIUE returns to action on Saturday hoping to extend its record winning streak. The Cougars enterain UW-Parkside at 3 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center.
