Things are looking up for the SIUE men's basketball team. The Cougars have won three of their last four games. The Cougars evened their overall record at 6-6 and hold a 2-4 record in the GLVC.
All of SIUE's remaining games are in conference play, making every contest important in hopes to earning a spot in the eight-team GLVC Tournament in late February.
"The last couple of games have given us some momentum to grow on and a great deal of confidence," SIUE Coach Jack Margenthaler. "We have finally been playing good team basketball."
The Cougars have responded well of late by using balanced scoring and a strong defense. SIUE has just two players averaging double figures in scoring with Marty Perry (Jacksonville) and Garrett Thomas (Riverton) leading the way.
Margenthaler has stayed with a youthful lineup and has started three freshman for the last five games. Brent Mueller (Columbia), Rob Baumgardner (Madisonville, Ky.) and Tim Bauersachs (Pinckneyville) all have earned spots in the lineup. The trio continue their first looks at the rest of the GLVC this week.
SIUE faces Indianapolis (6-5, 3-3) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Northern Kentucky (7-4, 3-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
"Indianapolis is a team that is very similar to us," said Margenthaler. "They have a couple of good shooters and the team plays good defense."
"Northern Kentucky is a talented team every year," said Margenthaler. "They will be tough to beat."
