Caldwell's Five RBIs Help SIUE Sweep at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. - SIUE defeated Murray State 15-4 in the finale of a three-game college baseball series at Johnny Reagan Field. The Cougars swept the three-game series and have now won four straight.

"We played a solid game," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "Pitching did a good job keeping the score down, the top of the order did a nice job with 12 hits and we made no errors."

SIUE improved to 15-19 on the season. The Cougars improved to 7-2 against Ohio Valley Conference opponents this season.

Like Saturday, the Cougars got out to a quick lead. James Vazquez led off the game with a single and then moved to second on a single by Mitch Matecki. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Vazquez scored on a sacrifice fly by Devin Caldwell to make it 1-0 SIUE.

Matecki made it 2-0 with a two-out RBI-single in the third inning. Devin Caldwell followed with a two-run home run to left to extend the Cougars lead to 4-0.

Murray State, 13-21, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd on a two-out single by Brand Eggenschwiler to make it 4-1.

SIUE plated two more in the 5th. Caldwell added his fourth RBI of the day with a two-out infield hit. Travis Becherer scored on the play, after reaching on a one-out single. Zach Hawkins followed with a double to score Caldwell to make it 6-1.

Murray State chased SIUE starter Ryan Daniels with a pair of hits in the fifth inning. Dustin Quattrocchi took over allowing a sac fly and an RBI hit to make it 6-3. Daniels was charged with the three runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. Quattrocchi would earn the win in relief. He allowed a run over three innings of work. He struck out four.

Vazquez made it 7-3 with a two-out RBI-single in the sixth that scored Chase Green. Brett Keeler and Vazquez each had RBI singles in a four-run seventh. Becherer capped the inning with a two-run double to make it 11-3.

SIUE picked up four in the ninth against a pair of Murray State relievers. Matecki drove home two with a triple, before Caldwell singled to drive in the final run.

Caldwell finished the afternoon 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs. Caldwell finished the series with 10 RBIs.

"He obviously had a real good weekend," Collins said.

Matecki was 3 for 6 with three RBIs. Vazquez finished 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Becherer was 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

The Cougars host Indiana State Tuesday at SimmonsCooper Complex. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
