CONWAY, Ark. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville offense certainly played their part with 20 hits Sunday but the Cougars fell to Central Arkansas in the series finale 16-13.

"The top and the middle of the order were solid today," said SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins.

Chase Green and Mitch Matecki each finished with four hits. Joel Greatting and Brett Keeler collected three hits apiece.

Greatting lifted the Cougars in a seven-run rally in the second inning. His first home run of the season helped SIUE take its first lead of the game. SIUE led 7-4 after 1 1/2 innings.

The game went back and forth with the Bears regaining the lead 8-7 with a four-run rally in the third inning. Matecki tied the score in the fourth inning with an RBI single. Greatting put the Cougars ahead 9-8 with an RBI single of his own.

"We took some good swings. The guys who were expected to hit were hitting," said Collins.

After the Cougars added one more run in the sixth, the Bears tied the game 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Blake Roberts.

The Central Arkansas bullpen held off SIUE in the eighth and let the offense take over for a six-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. SIUE made a final dash in the top of the ninth before falling short by three runs.

SIUE fell to 0-3 to start the season while Central Arkansas improved to 4-0.

Collins said the pitching staff was unable to overcome mistakes. With no fielding errors, the staff of Kyle Dodson, Ryan Daniels, Dustin Quattrocchi, and Brian Lorenz combined to hit four batters and walked nine more.

SIUE next heads to Oral Roberts for a three-game series beginning Friday in Tulsa, Okla.
