WICHITA, Kan. – SIUE junior catcher Brock Weimer has been named to the initial watch list for the Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com.
The award is given by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission to the top Division I collegiate catcher and the watch list will be updated to include other candidates until April 30, 2018.
The native of Edwardsville, Illinois, was a preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and currently is tied for the team lead with two home runs and five RBIs. Last season, he tied the school record for home runs in a season with 15 and led the team with 50 RBIs. He hit .329 overall and was a first team all-OVC pick.
"Brock had a tremendous year last year as a sophomore," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "With the work he has put in over the summer and throughout our offseason here, we expect another great year."
Weimer is one of four OVC catchers on the list, joining Morehead State junior Hunter Fain, Murray State junior Mike Farnell and Eastern Kentucky junior Alex Holderbach.
The watch list will be narrowed down May 16 to the semifinalists. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 21st Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28.
