EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE baseball will look to snap a season-long, six-game losing streak when UT Martin comes to Simmons Complex for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series.
The series begins with a 4 p.m. game Friday. The game time has been moved up due to the weather forecast. Saturday's 2 p.m. game and Sunday's 1 p.m. game remain as scheduled.
SIUE is 17-19 overall and 6-12 in the OVC, which places the Cougars ninth in the league standings. UT Martin is 14-20 overall and 4-11 in the OVC. The Skyhawks are tied for 10th with Eastern Illinois.
SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said the Cougars are ready to move forward.
"We're looking forward to the opportunity to turn the page," Lyons said. "The last week and a half has been rough for our guys, but they have had a great attitude and have come to practice with a lot of energy and ready to work."
The Cougars are hitting .277 as a team overall and a combined .306 in OVC play. Alec Skender leads the team in batting average with a .359 average. Brock Weimer, the reigning OVC Player of the Week and one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week, is leading the team in home runs (13) and RBIs (41).
UT Martin has a team earned run average of 6.21, which ranks seventh in the league. Their average of 8.61 strikeouts per nine innings ranks fourth in the OVC.
"They can pitch it a little bit," Lyons said. "They have some arms that have done a nice job."
Lyons also emphasized that the Cougars not focus on their opponent.
"It doesn't matter who you're playing. You have to come ready to play," Lyons added. "We're struggling right now, but we're ready to take on this weekend."
With 12 games remaining in the OVC season, the Cougars remain alive for the eight-team conference tournament, but Lyons know they'll have to improve.
"It's obvious, we need to take care of business if we want to play in the postseason," he said. "We need to just start playing a better brand of baseball to pick up some wins."
All three games will be broadcast online at SIUECougarNetwork.com. Friday's game is online only, while Saturday and Sunday's contests also can be heard on 887 the Sound.
