MOREHEAD, Ky. –SIUE baseball committed a season-high four errors Thursday, leading to seven unearned runs and dropped the opener of a three-game series 16-3 to Morehead State.
SIUE has lost three consecutive games and fell to 17-16 overall and 6-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference. More head State snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 23-11 overall and 9-4 in the OVC.
"It was very uncharacteristic of the way we have played up to this point," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "That was an ugly start to the weekend."
The Eagles scored four times on three hits and two errors in the first and never trailed in the game. Another Cougar error led to four more unearned runs in the third inning. MSU took advantage of an error in the fourth for yet another unearned run to go up 9-0.
"It starts on the mound and on defense and we struggled early on in both facets," Lyons added.
Morehead State starter Aaron Leasher held the Cougars hitless until Keaton Wright led off the fourth inning with an infield hit. Wright scored on a two-out Morehead State error to get the Cougars on the board.
Eric Giltz was 2 for 4 and the only player with more than a single hit for the Cougars, who finished with just five hits total.
The Eagles scored six times in the sixth inning to chase starter Nelson Martz. Tyler Niemann capped the inning with his second three-run homer of the day. Niemann was 2 for 4 with six RBIs.
Braxton Morris was 4 for 5 with five RBIs for Morehead State.
Martz (4-3) allowed 13 runs, six of which were earned, on 10 hits in five-plus innings. He struck out three.
Leasher (6-1) tossed six innings. He allowed three runs on four hits. He struck out four to earn the win.
"We're just going to move on to tomorrow as a new day," Lyons said. "It doesn't matter whether you lose 16-3 or 4-3. It's still a loss. We'll show up tomorrow and start anew."
The second game of a three-game series is Friday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT.
