Baseball Hits the Road to Tennessee Tech

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE baseball heads on the road for the first time in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Cougars will take on the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech in a weekend series in Cookeville, Tennessee.

The series is slated to begin with a 6 p.m. game Friday and continue with a 2 p.m. start Saturday and a 1 p.m. series finale Sunday.

The Cougars (10-6 overall, 2-1 in the OVC) are coming off a series win over Murray State last weekend at Simmons Complex. SIUE had a mid-week game with Evansville canceled due to weather.

Tennessee Tech (12-6, 3-0) split a two-game mid-week series with Illinois State Tuesday and Wednesday. The Golden Eagles swept an OVC series last weekend at UT Martin.

"In the OVC, it is tough to win on the road," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "We've had a good week of practice and we're looking forward to going to Cookeville and competing against a really good team in Tennessee Tech. They have a really talented group."

Lyons said the Cougars will approach the weekend the weekend the same as they have any other weekend.

"We're just going to focus on what we do in preparation and what we do down there when we play Tennessee Tech," Lyons said. "If you play good solid baseball you give yourself a chance to have success in the series. That's all we're trying to do."

Tennessee Tech enters the weekend with the best team earned run average in the OVC at 4.61. SIUE is fourth at 5.12. Brock Fulkerson and Danny Ehrsam will start games one and two for the Cougars while the finale is still to be decided. Starter Nelson Martz is recovering from an illness which kept him out of last competition last weekend.

We'll have Brock throw game one and Danny in game two the same as last weekend," Lyons said. "Sunday is still a question mark for us. Nelson (Martz) is trying to get some strength back so we'll see how he feels."

Lyons also is confident that his bullpen is prepared for the weekend.

"The guys who maybe struggled or had a little hiccup will bounce back just fine," he said. "Confidence is a big factor on both the pitching and offensive side."

All three games will be broadcast live on 88-7 the sound and online on the SIUE Cougar Network.
