Aces Score Early, Take Down Cougars
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Evansville built an 8-0 lead over the first three innings Wednesday then cruised to a 10-2 win over SIUE in non-conference baseball action at Braun Stadium.
Evansville improved to 23-14 overall with the win. SIUE dropped to 17-20.
"When you go down 8-0 it's hard to get fired up," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said.
(1-3) made the start for SIUE after scheduled starter Drew Staples
was scratched due to an injury suffered in batting practice. McDowell allowed five runs on six hits over two innings of work. He did not walk a batter, but he hit three. McDowell struck out one.
"The night got off to a bad start," Collins said referring to Staples' injury. "And just went downhill from there."
Evansville starter Ryan Billo tossed seven innings, allowing a run on five hits, to improve to 6-1. James Kohler pitched a scoreless eighth. SIUE scratched out a run on two hits in the ninth against reliever Tyler Miller.
"Their pitching is pretty good," Collins added. "We didn't do much offensively."
SIUE had just eight total hits against the Aces' trio. Brian Sipe
finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Sipe drove home Chase Green
in the sixth after Green had tripled to start the inning.
"Brian had a two nice hits for us tonight," Collins added.
was 2 for 3 with the RBI in the ninth. Devin Caldwell
tripled to lead off the inning, before Swinnen reached on an error, allowing Caldwell to score.
Evansville shortstop Eric Stamets led a 16-hit attack for the Aces. Stamets was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs. Kevin Kaczmarski was 3 for 5 with three RBIs.
SIUE returns home to host UT Martin in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference
series beginning Friday at Simmons Baseball Complex. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
