MEMPHIS, Tenn. - SIUE baseball opened the 2012 season Friday with a 4-2 win over Memphis in the season opener for both schools.
The Cougars (1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI-single off the bat of senior Brett Keeler. Memphis (0-1) evened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Keeler was 2 for 4 with the RBI.
SIUE broke the 1-1 tie with a three-run third inning. Devin Caldwell drove in a pair of runs in the inning with a two-out double down the left field line. James Vazquez and Nick Lombardo scored on the play. Caldwell scored later in the inning on a passed ball. He finished the game 2 for 4 with the two RBIs and two runs scored. Lombardo was 2 for 4 with the run scored in his collegiate debut.
Sophomore Travis Felax (1-0) earned the win in his first start of the year. Felax allowed the unearned run on just four Tigers' hits. He walked four, but struck out five in the win. Junior transfer Dylan Brown allowed a run on two hits in 1.1 innings in relief. Senior Dustin Quattrocchi earned the save with a 2.2 innings of perfect relief. Quattrocchi struck out three.
Grant Clayton (0-1) allowed all four Cougar runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out one. Adam McClain was 3 for 4 with the only Memphis RBI.
The two teams will play the second game of the series Saturday morning beginning at 10:30 a.m. The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., was changed to an earlier start because of rain forecasted later in the day.
