SIUE Baseball Signs Four Standouts

May 24, 2006

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Coming off its best season since 2001 and its 21st NCAA Tournament appearance, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team added four players for the 2007 roster.
SIUE posted 40 wins for the fourth time in school history this past season. Head Coach Gary Collins and Assistant Coach Tony Stoecklin looked to fill some holes in the offense and pitching staff.
The Cougars have signed Daniel Thomson (Brisbane, Australia), Steve Doll (Pocahontas), Lyle Winter (Pinckneyville) and Dustin Brooks (Rantoul).
Thomson batted .374 with 10 home runs, 12 doubles and 46 runs batted in this past season for Illinois Valley College. The 6-foot-4-inch Thomson can play third base or outfield for the Cougars and will have two years of eligibility with the Cougars.
"He's a good hitter. We expect him to be a big part of our offense next season," said Stoecklin.
Doll, a 6-4 left-hander, batted .397 in 116 at bats this past spring at Southwestern Illinois College. His 2006 season was halted by a injury to his jaw while playing first base. Doll, who has two years of eligibility remaining, posted six home runs, six double and 33 RBIs before being sidelined.
"We're pretty happy to have him in the program. He was being recruited heavily by Division I schools," said Stoecklin.
Winter threw for a 9-0 record with one save this season at Pinckneyville High School. His 67 strikeouts came in 60 innings with a 0.93 earned run average. The 6-0 pitcher plays summer baseball for the Southern Illinois Bullets.
"He has a fastball in the 80s," said Stoecklin. "I think is biggest asset simply is that he throw strikes."
Brooks batted .520 with two home runs, 20 doubles, 36 RBIs, and a .780 slugging percentage his senior season at Rantoul High School. A 6-0, 190-pound catcher, Brooks played under Rantoul Assistant Coach and former Cougar outfielder Luke Humphrey.
"He throws the ball well and he punishes the baseball at the plate," said Stoecklin of Brooks.
