EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Kyle Jones continued his sting of scoreless innings pitched to 34 Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball at Roy Lee Field.
The Cougars, 14-7-1 overall and 9-6-1 in the GLVC, lost the nightcap 5-1.
Rockhurst goes to 14-10 overall and 10-6 in the conference.
Jones, 5-0 on the season, has picked up three 1-0 victories in his last three starts. Jones have up three hits while striking out nine Hawks. He leads the team with 0.00 earned run average.
Jake Smith drove in Michael Dalpazzo with a fielder's choice in the first inning that scored the game's only run. That was all Jones would need to shut the door on the Hawks.
In the nightcap, Rockhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Cougars answered as Jim Grant doubled to right center that scored Jake Smith. The Hawks scored two more in the fifth and added one in the ninth for pick up the victory.
Clay Zavada, 2-2, took the loss giving up three runs in four innings. He struck out four and walked three in four innings. James Hertel pitched seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits.
Rockhurst hurlers Colby Parks and Patrick Larm combined for the win.
The same two teams battle again in a doubleheader at SimmonsCooper Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
