MOREHEAD, Ky. - SIUE softball had the offense in high gear and turned in a handful of strong pitching performances, sweeping Morehead State Saturday 7-4 and 6-1.
SIUE, which stands in fifth place in the Ohio Valley Conference, is now 8-10 in league play and 22-24 overall. The Cougars and the Eagles, 11-28 overall and 6-14 in the OVC, play once more Sunday in an 11 a.m. clash. SIUE now has won its fourth straight OVC series after today's action and will look for its first OVC sweep.
The Cougar pitching staff posted a solid day.
Sydney Baalman recorded her team-leading 11th win of the season in game one.
Kelsey Ray threw the final 2 2/3 innings in game one and picked up her OVC-leading fourth save.
Rylie Pindel tossed a complete-game victory in game two
"She (Pindel) pounded the zone," said SIUE Head Coach
Ben Sorden. "She minimizes pitches when she does that. She did a good job even though they had eight hits. I also was happy to see Kelsey come in and get the job done in the first game today."
Lexi King was tops on the team for the day with four hits and a .667 batting average (4-6)Â over the doubleheader
She set the tone early for SIUE with a first inning home run in game one, her third of the season. She would go on to add a single in game one as well as a double and a triple in game two.
"You could say she hit for the cycle on the day," noted Sorden.
Grace Lueke had two hits in game one, including her fourth home run of the season. It was a two-run home run that put the Cougars up by four runs in the sixth inning.
"It was a fantastic day for Grace," said Sorden.
SIUE's offense got off to another great start in game two, tallying four runs in the first inning. After a triple by King,
Emma Neuman singled her home. Lueke added a single before
Hayley Palm blasted a three-run homer to right center, her second round tripper of the season.
The Cougars would add a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, helping Pindel to her fifth victory of the season.
