1989 SIUE Women's Tennis - Hall of Fame
It was the culmination of four years of success. SIUE, the host of the 1989 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships, won its fourth consecutive national championship at Forest Park in St. Louis. The national individual title came down to the duo of players who had practiced together and played side by side for four seasons. Christina Bokelund defeated Portia George in the all-SIUE finals. Kim Gidley, the No. 3 singles player, was named an All-American for the Cougars. Bokelund and George would go on to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles championship. Coach Bob Meyers and Assistant Coach Russ Morris put together a strong team which included Sandi Stace, Nicki DeMuro, and Michelle Giacomini. DeMuro was a standout, earning her unprecedented third GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.
