SIUE Athletics Partners with Special Olympics
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. – Approximately 500 Special Olympics athletes from Southwestern Illinois competed Saturday at the annual Spring Games at Korte Stadium.
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Athletics Department partnered with the Special Olympics for the event, providing volunteers from student-athletes to coaches to staff members. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) became a sponsor for the event by absorbing all of the costs associated with facility rental and staffing costs.
SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt was pleased with the event. "We are very excited to play a role in making this a great day for Special Olympics. SIUE's student-athletes continue to demonstrate a high-level of commitment to service," said Hewitt.
Special Olympics athletes competed in Track and Field events, a Young Athletes Program demonstration (ages 2-7), Motor Activities Training Program, and various other fun events.
SIUE Athletics provided nearly 300 student-athletes, staff, and coaches that helped in every aspect of the event from running individual events to awarding medals.
